As the world has become more and more interconnected, we have realized that our choices as consumers have an impact that can be felt for more miles. Makeup consumers are realizing that they have the right to ask for clean beauty. Beauty that is created without any toxic chemicals or known carcinogens. But what about halal beauty products? Where does that fit into the clean beauty movement?

What Is Halal?

In Islam, Muslims believe that eating halal, earning halal income, and consuming halal goods are important. Eating halal food means eating meat that has been slaughtered in a humane way. Some Muslims believe in eating zabiha meat (meat slaughtered in the name God, raised and killed humanely, and drained of blood). In terms of halal certification, a product must NOT contain:

• Alcohol
• Pork
• Animals that were dead prior to slaughtering
• Animals not slaughtered properly 
• Blood and blood by products
• Carnivorous animals
• Birds of prey
• Land animals without external ears

What Is Halal Makeup?

Halal cosmetics are a fairly new concept, yet it is a much needed space in makeup. Halal makeup is makeup that is made without alcohol or animal fats, and harsh chemicals.

How Is Halal Makeup Different From Vegan Makeup?

Halal makeup can contain non-vegan ingredients such as beeswax, keratin, and lanolin—an ingredient derived from sheep’s wool. Animal-derived ingredients like these are considered halal but are not vegan.

Vegan makeup can contain alcohols which are not halal. 

At Mora Cosmetics, we have decided to that we wanted to work a color chemist to formulate products that are not only halal, but vegan as well. 

Is Halal Makeup Only For Muslims?

Halal makeup are cosmetics that anyone can use.

It just means that they contain no alcohols, no animal products (unless it is zahiba), and that they allow Muslims to pray with the makeup on.
